Pharaoh Tutankhamun

Ancient Egypt: New Kingdom 1343 -1325 BC

At the age of nine Tutankhaten ascended the throne of Egypt. Tragically he only reigned nine years before dying mysteriously at the age of 18. The experts believe that “Tut” was Akhenaten’s brother or son. Akhenaten had banned the worship of all gods except for the god Aten. In the third year of Tutankhaten’s reign, Tutankhaten lifted this ban and changed his name to Tuntankhamun to make peace with the followers of the god Amun.

Tutankhamun’s fame came from the 1922 discovery of his untouched tomb in the Valley of the Kings. For centuries, tomb raiders had ransacked and destroyed the 60-some tombs of the Pharaohs of Egypt without discovering Tutankhamun’s tomb. Tutankhamun’s burial mask can be viewed at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Materials Needed:

Paper Version:

Yellow construction paper (12 in. x 9 in.) – 2 pieces

Blue construction paper (12 in. x 18 in.) – 2 pieces

Tape (clear packing tape)

Glue stick or glue

Scissors

Floral wire - 2

Duct tape version:

Brown paper grocery bag

Duct tape (blue and yellow) – 1 each

Scissors – bandage scissors or other sharp scissors work best for cutting duct tape

Floral wire – 2

Other options:

Laminate construction paper - to extend the life of the hat (buy by the roll and buy good quality). Low quality laminate will separate from paper quickly.

Foam sheets – large (12 in. x 18 in.) or by the roll (18 in. x 72 in.) Tape on the inside when possible, use transparent duct tape on exterior when necessary.
