Nubia or Kush,
known today as Sudan, bordered southern Egypt. The Nubians had long been under
Egyptian rule but they regained independence when Ramses III, the last of the
great Pharaohs, died. When no strong
leader rose to rule Egypt, the Nubian king Piye gathered his army and marched
to Thebes to restore order. The Egyptian princes united their armies to fight
but it was in vain. The Nubian dynasty lasted 66 years until the Assyrians, in
partnership with the Egyptians, forced the Nubians out of power.
The Nubian kings
wore crowns with double cobras to signify the unity between Egypt and
Nubia. A statue of King Taharka wearing
such a cap-like crown can be found in The British Museum.
