Egyptian reliefs
in Medinet Habu, Egypt (Rameses III’s mortuary temple) tell the story of the
Pelesets (Philistines) raiding Egypt during the eighth year of Rameses III
(1175 B.C.).
Philistines are thought to have descended
from the Sea Peoples; their artwork is reminiscent of the Greeks. Though their
origins are debated, their expertise in making iron is well known as is their
distinctive feathered headgear and their use of spears and round shields. The Philistines inhabited the southern coast
of Canaan along with their enemies, the Israelites. The Bible recounts how the
Israelites would go down to the Philistines, who had chariots of iron, to have
their plows, axes, and sickles sharpened.
The most famous Philistines in the Bible were the giant Goliath and the
temptress Delilah. Babylon destroyed
the Philistine cities around 600BC.
