Ancient
China: 259-210 BC

Qin (pronounced
Chin), the first ruler to unite all of China wished for a title like no
other. He created a new title
combining two words: huang: big/great and di: supreme God in
Heaven. The western world translated
this word huangdi as “emperor” and so Qin became the first emperor of
China. To keep his empire safe from
enemy attack, Qin built a wall stretching across the entire northern side of
his empire. This became known as the
precursor to the Great Wall of China. Initially built of compacted dirt, the
Great Wall was rebuilt as we know it today with brick during the Ming Dynasty. Upon his death in 210BC, Qin was buried in a
tomb with 7,000 life-sized terra cotta soldiers and
horses known as the Terra Cotta Army.
Emperor
Qin was known for wearing this emperor’s hat.
